The behind the scenes of the Fall 18 Couture collection

It seems that the latest brainchild collection conceived by Pierpaolo Piccioli left the house’s founder Valentino Garavani in tears. A majestic and extremely romantic lineup, composed of 63 outfits, was marvellously constructed with a jubilation of colours and volumes that challenge proportions and gravity.

For Piccioli, couture is the medium to express his own vision of beauty and his intimate dreams. Therefore, instinct drove him to draw inspiration from different sources and historical periods: from the 18th century to the Middle Ages to Greek mythology and Renaissance. Haute Couture is definitely the most intimate moment of dream, in which the most profound beauty overflows. This is translated into an usage of precious brocades, intarsias, embroideries and patchworks; flamboyant capes are worn over trousers, blouses and dresses.

Piccioli wanted every dress of the Fall 2018 Couture collection to be given a name by the tailors of his atelier: thus, very suggestive and romantic names sprang out, like they were ready to be worn to morph life into a fairytale: Amore fuggente is a dress with Apollo and Daphne embroidered on it. Some other names: Sogno ad alta voce (Loud dream), Oltre i confini (Beyond the boundaries), Alchimia (Alchemy), Orchidea (Orchid), Mata Hari, Per Passione (For Passion) and Vanitas are only some of the masterpieces that will remain written in Valentino’s cultural heritage over history.
