Enter the Italian brand’s backstage

Storytelling seems to have become the unavoidable condition to develop a Fashion collection today; it actually provides a common thread between the outfits’ succession on catwalks, and it is a medium to enclose the garments into a special aura and significance bubble, making them even more desirable than they would be if taken out of their context.
Ian Griffiths is an expert in translating womanhood Zeitgeist and feminine needs into high tailoring clothing, and for next season, he thought about a wardrobe worthy of a contemporary female 007. Inspired by feminist TV series Killing Eve and 1960’s comic strip spy Modesty Blaise, Max Mara’s creative director had a very vivid cinematic vision in his mind, describing the powerful Bond Girl while “starting out in whitehall in London, her heels clicking in the corridors of power, she wears three-piece sharkskin suiting with gilets that could be the vestige of a gun holster or a bulletproof vest.”

The Spring 2020 défilé is then essentially centered on masculine cuts, with ton-sur-ton ties, strictly following a Savile Row approach on feminine tailoring and charged with a strong military character, here declined into -mostly- three-piece suiting, made of blazer, vest and high-waisted shorts, emphasizing utility pockets aplenty and safari jackets. Nothing surprising, yet wonderfully Max Mara, in the highly wearable and empowering tailoring – perfectly executed as usual – which doesn’t exasperate experimental new shapes; real innovation stands instead in a progressive boost in practicality and versatility, serving as the armour against everyday life challenges women need nowadays.
To crown the outfits, some army-style caps were worn by the models, giving a Lara Croft twist to the elegant satin evening looks.
